The index CSV's columns: figures ("current" or "snapshot"), snapshot_date, employees, services (how many services have a plan for that team), lowest, median, highest and median_per_employee (US dollars a month), the same without Deel, prices_checked_from and prices_checked_to, and notes (on today's rows, the qualifier and caveats that go with the figures; on a snapshot's rows, its qualifier: how many services it counted and when their prices were checked).

New changes as we record them: Atom feed · JSON feed.

The index files give figures across services only: each service's own prices are on its page on this site. The files are in our own words, with no text copied from providers' websites. The JSON file's "dateModified" is the date the figures, the services counted or the change log last changed; "pricesChecked" says when the prices behind today's figures were last checked, which can move without any figure changing.

What the index measures

Each figure is for W-2 employees only (no contractors), all in one US state, with federal and state payroll taxes filed and paid for you, on each service's cheapest published plan for that team, at standard monthly list prices. Only the services that publish prices are counted: ADP RUN and Rippling don't publish list prices; SurePayroll is left out because its own pages showed different prices. Not counted in the index either: ADP's offer terms price a RUN self-onboarding bundle at $59/month + $4/employee after free months, only for new clients with up to 2 employees in states where offered, or 1-9 employees in Florida, Texas and Georgia (ADP RUN pricing). The figures depend on which services we track, so adding or dropping a service can move them: every row of the files says how many services it counts.

The index files also hold its quarterly snapshots, one for each calendar quarter: so far one, recorded on October 24, 2026.

When you quote a figure, please keep its qualifier (which services it is among, that it is a list price, and when the prices were checked) and any caveat that comes with it, as in this sentence:

For 10 employees in one state with payroll taxes filed for you, payroll services cost $87 to $290 a month ($87 to $200 without Deel), with a median of $109 a month or $10.90 per employee (among the 13 US payroll services we track that publish prices; list prices only; checked between October 22, 2026 and October 25, 2026; Deel's own blog posts give lower starting prices than its pricing page; Deel's product page describes its self-service option as a way to handle taxes and filings yourself, and suggests its managed option, which has no published price, for hiring across multiple states; Hourly also says to request a quote for exact pricing; Hourly's help center says employees' home address must be in California, so confirm it serves your state).

The index files give today's figures with their qualifier and caveats: in the CSV file's "notes" column, and in "qualifier" and "notes" in the JSON file, whose "serviceNotes" also lists every caveat our data records about the services counted. A snapshot's figures come with their qualifier. For the change log: "Source: Payroll Price Check price change log", with the date of the change.
